The Gloves Are Off!

Newt Gingrich was at the top of the heap going into the Iowa caucuses. Until that is, Romney’s attack ads took him out. There can’t be any doubt whatsoever, that Mitt Romney’s ads did the trick. And Newt has made no effort to conceal the fact that he is seriously hacked off about that.

Newt made no bones about the fact that he was seriously angry about the ads, and the effect they had with Gingrich’s standing in the polls. The ads were so effective, that everyone is expecting Gingrich to drop out. But I don’t think he will. Newt will not only not get out, he will make it his own personal crusade and life’s mission to destroy Romney.

I think that Newt is going to be even more motivated to destroy Romney than he is to win the primary. And if that’s true, what are the repercussions? Who exactly stands to benefit from this retaliatory campaign? My guess, is it’s going to be Rick Santorum. Santorum is doing the strategically correct thing and maintaining a squeaky clean posture, just sitting this out over there on the other side.

Gingrich has already got a full-page ad in the Union Leader, comparing himself to Romney. And you have to ask yourself, how Romney is feeling about the upcoming Saturday night debate. Anyone who’s gotten even the most remote feel for how Gingrich responds to personal attacks, must believe that he will go for the throat in this face-off with Romney.

Trust me when I say, not only are the gloves coming off, but I think I see Gingrich slipping on a set of brass knuckles. And there’s the real possibility that Newt will do to Romney what Bachmann did to Pawlenty.  There can be absolutely no doubt; Gingrich’s motivation has now gone into hyper drive.

My dad used to tell me, “Son, there’s nothing more dangerous than a man who has nothing to lose.” And frankly, from where I sit, that describes Newt Gingrich perfectly. Before those ads came out he was neck and neck with Romney – even leading the pack substantially, depending upon what poll you were reading. But now, he’s dropped like a rock to fourth place. What does he have to lose?!

The reality is, that no one else has really taken it to Romney.  And if there is anyone who can articulate a credible – and even surgical – case against Mitt Romney, it is absolutely Newt Gingrich.  And if I were Mitt, I might really be second-guessing the prudence of releasing those attack ads.

Sure, they were absolutely effective, but at what price?  I think, come this Saturday, it’s going to be less Saturday Night Debate, and more Saturday Night Fever.
